WRC.
WRC.

The Jordan Rally has been a round of the Middle Eastern Rally Championship since the 1980s, but it wasn't until 2008 that it made its debut on the world stage, when Jordan became the first Arab country to host a round of the WRC.
Under the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Al Hussein, the chairman of Jordan Motorsport, the inaugural WRC rally was well run, stunning to watch and was hailed a success by teams and drivers. After a year out in 2009 the event returns this year with a few modifications but the same epic character.
This is a rally of extremes. From scorching temperatures - which can top 40 degrees Celsius - to the wild landscape the sandy gravel stages snake through. The headquarters and Service Park are located next to the Dead Sea at the lowest land point on earth, 50km away from the Kingdom's capital city of Amman.
This year some of the 2008 stages have been modified and others replaced altogether in an effort to introduce more variety to the route, which starts in the forests north of Amman at altitudes of more than 1000 metres, then concentrates in and around the Jordan Valley at around 400 metres below sea level.
New for 2010
Two events for the price of one. The 2010 Jordan Rally counts as a round of both the FIA Middle Eastern Rally Championship and the World Rally Championship.
A revised itinerary. The timetable of the Jordan Rally follows the Islamic weekend by finishing on a Saturday as opposed to the traditional Sunday.
A ceremonial start at the City of Jerash - one of the largest and best preserved examples of Roman architecture in the world.
Road works ahead after freak storms lash Jordan
After the fiercest storms to hit Jordan in a generation, organisers of the forthcoming WRC event have issued a defiant message that the 'show will go on'.
Last week six months' worth of rain fell in 72 hours to cause extensive damage across the Kingdom with chunks of the rally's 348 kilometres battered by the torrential downpours and the resulting flash floods.
But in an incredible show of determination, officials began orchestrating the work to repair the damage even before the rains subsided to ensure the biggest social and sporting event to hit the Middle East this year will take place from April 1-3 as planned.
"It has been an incredible show of unity, determination and professionalism by all parties involved," said Khaled Zakaria, Jordan Rally clerk of the course.
"Even during the horrendous storms, we had people working up to their knees in mud and water determined to restrict the amount of damage caused to the routes. It has been a fantastic national effort and after surveying the damage, we are confident of having everything back on track soon."
The army has been called in to work alongside Government and Municipal agencies as Jordan pulls out all the stops to ensure the event lives up to its reputation of being one of the world's great motorsport events.
The problems have been compounded due to the stage locations, with many running below sea level and affected by the water which cascades down from the higher ground. The route will be fine tuned to avoid areas that are beyond repair, but the routes are not expected to be changed extensively.
Jordan Rally entries announced
The organisers of the Jordan Rally have published the seeded entry list for this year's event, round three of the World Championship season, which starts on 1 April.
The WRC event rotation system meant Jordan was absent from the 2009 calendar, but it returns this year to run together with a round of the Middle East Rally Championship. In total the entry list features thirty-six cars, the majority of which are registered for the WRC, P-WRC or S-WRC competitions.
Topping the list, after his win in Mexico, is championship leader Sebastien Loeb of the Citroen Total World Rally Team. He and team-mate Dani Sordo will drive C4 World Rally Cars. In the manufacturer's second tier squad, former F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen will join Sebastien Ogier at the Citroen Junior World Rally Team.
The most recent Jordan Rally winner, Mikko Hirvonen, joins Jari-Matti Latvala as the two points nominated Ford Focus entries for the BP Ford Abu Dhabi team. Abu Dhabi driver Khalid Al Qassimi will pilot a third car for the squad.
The Stobart M-Sport team will field two Focus RS WRCs for Henning Solberg and Matthew Wilson, while Munchis World Rally Team driver Federico Villagra will start his second rally of the season in another Focus World Rally Car. Rally Mexico podium finisher Petter Solberg will also be in Jordan, driving his privately entered Citroen C4 WRC.
In addition to the top level WRC competition, Jordan counts as the third round of the Production Car and Super 2000 World Rally Championships.
The S-WRC features its biggest line-up of the season so far, with nine entries including Skoda drivers Per-Gunnar Andersson, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Patrik Sandell and Ford drivers Janne Tuohino, Michal Kosciuszko and Xevi Pons. Of his year's S-WRC registered drivers, only Albert Llovera and Martin Prokop have elected to skip Jordan.
After victory in Mexico, reigning P-WRC-champion Armindo Araujo will be back in the Production category, where he'll face rivals including Gianluca Linari and Martin Semerad. The Production regulars will be joined by Subaru Impreza driver Amjad Farah, a multiple Jordan National Rally champion who has been granted a wild card entry by the event's organisers, Jordan Motorsport.
